The Story of Falcon Enamel

Think of classic white and blue enamel plates, and the chances are you're thinking of this original range. Falcon was created in Birmingham in the 1920s by Joe Kleiner & Sons who devised the original brand of cookware and applied the now classic design of ice-white edged in blue. The original enamel range was refreshed in 2011 with additional cookware sets and fresh colours, whilst the gauge of the original mug was also increased so that the products became even more hard-wearing and durable.

And therein lies the enduring appeal of enamel plates and other items from the Falcon range. They are incredibly functional and tough but also wonderfully beautiful, with a sense of timeless elegance and vintage appeal. Today, enamel plates, bowls and cups are also popular in camping and outdoor adventures, so they're associated with a sense of fun and excitement.

How is enamelware so strong?

This manufacturing technique fuses porcelain with heavy-gauge steel to make it very strong, smooth and resistant to chemicals. Vitally, it cannot burn, and it can take on wonderfully bright colours that don't fade. Even better, if you drop enamel products, they may chip, but they won't break. They are also safe in the dishwasher and can be used in an oven up to 270C, as well as on an electric or gas hob.

How to care for your Falcon enamelware

If you've invested in this beautiful cookware, then you'll want to take care of it. Luckily it's very simple to do this:

1. Wash your enamelware plates, cups, bowls and cookware in mild liquid soap before you use them, but only use a soft cloth or washing up brush - no scourers or abrasive cleaners as these can chip the vitreous porcelain enamel that coats the steel.

2. Don't leave empty enamelware dishes in ovens or stoves.

3. Lightly coat your enamelware with a little cooking oil before you use it as this can prevent staining.

4. To remove baked-on stains and food, you can soak enamelware in warm water and soap. You can also treat tougher stains with baking soda and lemon.
