Glass jars for halloween

Posted by The Wares Team on 20th Oct 2022

Halloween is just a few days away and it's a perfect occasion to style your home with themed decorations for those trick-or-treaters! Whether you love the warmth of illuminated pumpkins or scary witch cutouts, there's no doubt that Halloween decor is definitely fun. Put taste aside and delight kids of all ages with some homemade attractions for your windowsills and mantelpieces!

The beauty of Halloween glass jars

We're all about reducing plastic waste at Wares, and we always see a spike in glass jar sales around this time of year as our customers stock up for seasonal crafting projects. There is so much that you can do with a humble jar as well, simply using basic crafting supplies that you'll probably already have around the house. Here are some easy ideas to get you started.

1. Create funny face jars

Spray your glass jar with metallic gold paint and once it is dry, use a black marker to draw funny faces onto the glass. You can create a little line-up of characters to sit along a surface and to bring seasonal cheer to visitors. Why not experiment with different colours and add a battery-operated tealight inside each jar to make them glow.

2. Fill with fairy lights

Jars also look beautiful filled with strings of pretty lights. Choose cool LED light strings that are battery-operated and you can place them inside jars with orange and black tissue for an atmospheric, twinkling finish. This decoration couldn't be easier to make either!

3. Use to gift Halloween sweets

Tiny glass jars also make fantastic sweet gifts. You could make your own fudge, buy green gummy eyes and gruesome candies, make bright green peppermint patties or even brightly coloured coconut ice. Fill your jars and decorate each with themed Halloween tags and cute little pumpkin or bat-shaped designs. A green, black and metallic ribbon trio will finish the look perfectly.

4. Use to serve drinks at a Halloween party If you're having a Halloween party, then why not spray some Mason jars gold and silver to catch the light and then use them to serve towering milkshakes with scoops of blood-red strawberry ice cream, or hard punch for the grown-ups? You can buy glass jar toppers to transform them into drinks with straws for total ease.

5. Scary Mummy jars

This is a great craft for smaller children as it's so easy. Simply wrap glass jam jars in bandages - using plenty of glue. Let them dry and then add sticky googly eyes so that you have your very own 'mummies' to decorate the table!

6. Create themed displays

Large confectionary-style glass jars look wonderful stacked with pretty miniature pumpkins and squashes in different colours, perhaps with small decorative skulls in between. Add gold sparkles and anything that takes your fancy for an easy and fun Halloween centrepiece.

7. Top your Mason jars

Mason jar lids are also perfect for decorating. Simply glue your chosen Halloween skulls, clay ghosts, miniature plastic bats, or fabric Witch's hats onto the lid, and create ready toppers.

8. Make a spooky terrarium

A large confectionary-style glass jar with a lid makes a handy terrarium. Simply fill it with ornamental gravel and moss and add miniature succulents, pretty stones and shells, interesting Halloween motifs and decorations and anything else that takes your fancy. This will look lovely on a windowsill or side table to add interest to your interior and kids will find them fascinating too.

9. Stack up Halloween cookies.

With a little food dye and some imagination, you can make wonderful themed cookies in orange, green and chocolate brown. Decorate them with coloured writing icing, smarties, and chocolate chunks to make eyes and toothy grins! These will look wonderful in a large jar or bowl, and you could serve them with a Mason jar of hot chocolate after a chilly evening of trick or treating.
