If you've ever been tempted to try your hand at home-brewing, you're in luck, as we have a large and ever-expanding range of fantastic glass beer bottles at Wares of Knutsford. This specialist category of glass bottles is always popular, both with home-brewing enthusiasts and novices, and also with independent businesses who buy glass bottles for commercial purposes. But what do you need to know about glass beer bottles, and why is glass the superior material for your amber nectar? Let's take a closer look.

Why Choose Glass Beer Bottles?

Glass beer bottles are a great choice for home brewers and businesses alike. Firstly, they come in both amber and clear colours, which are ideal for preserving the drinks inside (not that they'll be sitting around for long!) Glass is also infinitely recyclable, making it an environmentally-friendly choice, and we know that this is extremely important to our customers, who are seeking to build more sustainable lifestyles and businesses.

How to Make Beer at Home

One of the easiest ways to make beers is with a home brewing beer-making kit, which has everything you need in one box and simple instructions. Most of these kits also come with the equipment that you'll need, such as a brewing kettle, funnel, fermenter and airlock, auto-siphon and stir spoon.

Before you begin to make beer, you'll need to sanitise your glass bottles because any bacteria will cause the beer to spoil. With that in mind, sanitise anything that comes into contact with the beer after the boiling process. You can use various products to do this - Star San and PBW are two popular brands.

1. The Boiling Process

Once your glass beer bottles and equipment are sanitised, you'll need to fill the brew kettle with water and heat it, whilst steeping your grains until the water reaches 170 degrees. When removing the grains, the water should drip back into the kettle from the grain bag. It's important not to squeeze the grain bag, however, or you might get unwanted tannin flavours in the resulting brew.

Boil the kettle and add malt extracts, and then return it to the boil, before adding hops in stages according to the recipe you are following. It's important to follow your chosen recipe precisely and carefully.

2. The Fermenting Process

At this stage you'll have wort, which is also known as sugar water. Cool this as quickly as you can using an ice bath or a wort chiller. You're now ready to start the fermenting process. Pour the cooled wort straight into your fermenter and then add water to bring the level up to around five gallons or the amount recommended in the recipe. Aerate it by agitating the mix, and then add dry yeast. Seal the fermenter, add the airlock and store your mix in a cool, dark place. For proper fermentation, the temperature needs to be at around 68 degrees.

3. The Bottling Process

After around two weeks of fermentation, you can bottle your beer. Clean your glass bottles, caps, bucket, and transfer hose and boil your priming sugar in water before adding the cool mix to your bottling bucket. Transfer the beer using a hose from your fermenter to the bucket, and then fill the bottles using a bottle filler and hose with a bucket spigot. Fill each bottle to the top and then cap it. You can then give your beer a couple of weeks at room temperature to carbonate.

For beginners, the best tip is to use a beer-making kit as these are a great way to ease yourself into this hobby and get great results. You might also want to join a local enthusiasts club, as you'll find many experienced brewers who are keen to share their experience and tips.
